The Laser-Matter Interactions Group
of the Center for Energy Research studies the interactions of
high-energy short-pulse lasers with matter, both above and below
the ablation threshold. Our researchers include members of the
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, Electrical and
Computer Engineering Department, and the Center for Energy Research.
Experimental studies are performed in the Laser Plasma and Laser
Matter Interactions Laboratory, which houses several solid-state
and excimer lasers as well as an extensive suite of diagnostics.
- Sub-ablation threshold studies
- We study the micromechanical behavior of materials subjected to
high-cycle thermal stresses imposed by short-pulse lasers. This includes
laser-induced damage to UV optics and surface evolution of energy-absorbing
armor for pulsed radiation sources.
- Laser ablation plume studies
- We study the internal structure, expansion dynamics and
phase-change physics of laser ablation plumes.
Ablation plumes are found in applications such as pulsed laser
deposition and laser-plasma light sources, and are related to
a variety of terrestrial and astrophysical applications.
- Laser plasma studies
- We study the hydrodynamics and radiative properties of
laser plasmas in intensity regimes from 109 to
1013 W/cm2. At present, our research
includes laser-plasma light sources for extreme ultraviolet
lithography and radiative properties of non-LTE underdense
laser plasma.
- Facilities
- Our experimental research is performed in the
Laser Plasma and Laser Matter Interactions Laboratory.
Light sources include Joule-class excimer and solid state
lasers.
