CER Outreach Council
The CER Outreach Council was formed in late 2014 to help determine the focus and content of the Center’s outreach activities. The council meets every 3 months and is composed of chair, Dmitri Orlov, and CER members.
STEM outreach is important to us because:
- Most of the 30 fastest-growing occupations in the next decade will require a STEM background.
- Cities with more STEM workers do better economically and demonstrate higher job growth, employment, and income
- The number of U.S. companies reporting difficulty in filling STEM positions because of a lack of skills grew from 14 percent in 2010 to almost 40 percent only three years later.
(Statistics are from Change the Equation, a nonprofit advocating for K-12 STEM literacy)
Council Activities
- Decide which outreach events to participate in and designate event leaders
Goals
- Provide service opportunities for CER members
- Connect members from different research groups who might otherwise have little contact
- Encourage other members to engage in outreach events
